The Nouvel Institut Franco-Chinois will be hosting the work of Xiaojun Song and a piece by Cai Yaling.
Currently represented by the Françoise Besson gallery, Xiaojun Song lived in China until she was 24 years old, before coming in France to continue her studies. Her artistic practice naturally reflects her vision of existence and her place in the world, at the crossroads of two different cultures. Fullness and emptiness, the visible and the invisible are at the heart of her work, which focuses on constant research into their relationships and compositions, particularly through her Méditations series. For her, everything is simply the repetition of a cycle that cannot be controlled. Meditation is repetition, and her painting is the repetition of the same gesture, like a catharsis translating the unfolding of her personal experiences as a foreigner who has come to live far from her roots.
Cai Yaling will be presenting an installation at the Nouvel Institut Franco-Chinois, at the end of a residency at the Cité des arts in spring 2024, organised by Yishu8 - Maison des Arts de Pékin: The resonance between our essences. This work is a tribute to the artist Pan Yuliang, a former student at the Franco-Chinese Institute in Lyon, through a portrait made of pearl curtains. The installation highlights Pan's important contribution to artistic and cultural exchanges between France and China.
