Lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa, and in Stockholm, Sweden.

Known for his site-specific interventions and sound installations, James Webb introduces objects into a variety of environments to create possible new forms of understanding and communication between artworks and audiences. In A Series of Personal Questions Addressed to a Roman Coin, the artist questions a silver denarius minted in 70AD, which would have been used for all kinds of transactions during the Empire, from buying bread to paying bribes. Although the artefact does not give or suggest any reply, the questions posed by James Webb, involving the object’s various experiences, foster a different type of dialogue with the public.

Also on view at the Parc de la Tête d’Or, the garden of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, at URDLA and the macLYON.
