BOILING BRAIN: Maite y Manuel

Maite and Manuel create an artistic language based on their shared experiences, the moments of life, and the emotions they share in their daily lives. The creatures they invent put themselves on stage and transmit their perception of the world. It is the fruit of their shared existence that becomes the starting point for their four-handed pictorial compositions.

For Maite y Manuel, drawings on paper are a starting point and a rational ground that acts as an anchor for composing the image, these drawings when transferred to canvas act as a structure on which they build with paint guided by feeling and intuition.

In a battle between themselves and together against the canvas, they attempt to immortalise the spirit of making the painting, the feeling of wet paint, and keeping the thought process transparent, as if the painting is still moving and open to change.

After weeks of relentless painting, a transformative moment arrives, a release from the pressure to perform. Intuition takes over, the mind goes quiet. In this state, ideas bubble to the surface, and strokes become faster, dirtier, angrier and looser. Maite and Manuel call this powerful state of mind the “Boiling Brain".
