Ten emerging artists–five each from the regional and international scenes–have been invited to imagine a project for the 17th Lyon Biennale.

Housed in a former primary school in Villeurbanne, the Institut d’Art Contemporain is both an art centre and a Regional Contemporary Art Fund. Since 2009, it has hosted the Rendez-vous event, renamed Jeune création internationale in 2019. This event brings together the Lyon Biennale, IAC, the Museum of contemporary art–macLYON and an art school in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, which this year is the École Supérieure d’Art Annecy Alpes (ESAAA). Ten emerging artists–five each from the regional and international scenes–have been invited to imagine a project for the 17th Lyon Biennale.
For this latest edition, the regional artists were selected via a call for projects open to all artists with ties to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The international selection, however, was made through invitations extended to curators and in conjunction with other biennials and cultural institutions. With in situ residency periods, the strong emphasis on making new work provides artists with the opportunity to realize unprecedented projects.
