Prompted by the local heritage landscape, Clemens Behr realizes fleeting pop-up sculptural installations that exist only for the short time he needs to photograph them. His project for the 16th Lyon Biennale captures a number of architectural landmarks of the Lyon area (Sainte Marie-Lyon secondary school in La Verpillière; the Auditorium, home to the Orchestre National de Lyon; Musée Lugdunum; and the Cité des Étoiles housing estate in Givors). Over a series of fast interventions across these locations, Behr has constructed and photographed his temporary structures. At the Fagor factories, he is showing a composite an installation made with elements used in these sitespecific constructions where he appropriates inexpensive everyday materials to which he adds sound and light. Akin to set designs from a 1980s Science Fiction movie, Behr fuses the reconstruction of the old with the destruction of the future. His ruins probe the fragile utopias of Brutalist architecture, built for eternity on the promise of a better world.
