manifesto of fragility – A World of Endless Promise

Born 1981 in Silver Spring, USA.
Lives and works in Los Angeles, USA.
Playing with citation and reappropriation, Jesse Mockrin’s oil paintings subvert the masterpieces of art history. The artist samples details from mythological and biblical pictures that she considers significant. By cropping some parts and combining other elements from works made in different eras but depicting the same events, she fuses bodies, faces and fabric folds to create fluid, multiple identities. Shorn of their original narrative context, Mockrin’s pieces disrupt the conventions of the source images, injecting them with fresh meaning. Her canvases thus interrogate the contemporary age, cultural constructs of gender, the hierarchy of power, and the fragility and resilience of the human body.
Also on view at Gadagne Museum and in The many lives and deaths of Louise Brunet at macLYON.
