L’exposition « Paysages, grands formats » propose de plonger dans le paysage en tant que motif, projection ou abstraction.
This exhibition offers to question the way we look at past or present landscapes whether they are natural, manufactured or fantasized. It presents a selection of contemporary artist’s works, into which the scenery becomes a memory of a personal or collective story from a society and its representations of an iconic landscape, fantasy of a lost Arcadia.
The paintings, videos, photography and installations on display also raise the question of size through different mediums as the artist's attempt to break out of traditional framework from the original landscape fantasized by our contemporary societies, to more intimate sceneries, drawn from collective or individual memories. The works on display invite the viewers to question the place of images and representations of nature, into which we can project to elsewhere, an ideal, a feeling of nostalgia.
It’s only during the 19th century, that the concept of landscape freed itself from its decorative status, being at the center of all the major aesthetics revolutions: realism, romanticism, and impressionism. With Paul Cézanne’s works during the early 20th century, the subject “landscape” becomes a place of artistic experience. Since then, the abstraction of ecology definitely ratified this precedence rendering arbitrary any other delimitation of such a wide field of action.
