The sculptural works of Nicki Green explore issues of embodiment, identity and spirituality. The Champignonnière at Caluire Fort – one of Lyon’s defensive bunkers, which was converted between 1960 and 1972 into a place for growing mushrooms – provides the artist with a poetic example of a porous, flexible world. These sculptures – squeezed and moulded by hand using glazed clay, a material chosen for its transmutation properties – explore the possibilities of metamorphosis. Adopting three different stances related to ritual washing, the figures appear to engage in different states of the being’s embodiment, in-between strength and fragility, the sacred and profane. In her transdisciplinary practice, the artist devises new strategies of resilience that defy tradition and convention.
